Alan began his engineering career in the 1980s assisting at the famed Electric Lady Studios, where he worked with producer Mutt Lange, The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Hall and Oates, and Foreigner. He then moved on to engineer at A&R Recording Studios, working with legendary producers Phil Ramone and Arif Mardin, and artists Billy Joel and Judy Collins. Later, Alan engineered on numerous soundtracks and was a music supervisor for Sesame Workshop.

He became a full-time mastering engineer in 1996. To Alan Silverman, the role of his craft can be explained in very simple terms. "Mastering is key to presenting a recording in the best possible light," he says. "It's a critical part of music production."

In addition to operating Arf! Mastering, Alan teaches the subject to tonemeister students at NYU|Steinhardt Music Technology, and to undergraduates at the NYU|Tisch Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music.
